2014 Washington Tuna Classic Event Wrap Up

With the final numbers back from the food banks and checks out the door, it’s time to extend thanks to wrap up our 2014 Washington Tuna Classic.  Our humble group of volunteers once again had a great time putting on this year’s event and we are proud to once again have been sold out. The Captains Meeting on Friday night included a safety brief from the Greys Harbor Coast Guard division along with directions for returning to port from our WTC Crew.  We had fifty nine of the sixty registered teams show up and a total of fifty six team’s fish with three having to turn back due to mechanical issues.

The morning release at first light on Saturday went smoothly with a roll call release due to heavy fog.  Our intrepid teams set forth into decent seas in all directions to find the largest Albacore in the area.  By the time the day was done, forty seven teams had donated over 600 fish weighing nearly thirteen thousand pounds to the food banks.  Add that to over 3,200 pounds of dry goods donated we made a substantial dent in hunger.  Great work!

This year’s Warrior Week went quite smoothly with a total of seventy four warrior rides provided by teams all week including twenty two on game day.  You guys hooked them up with lifetime memories as welcome thanks for their service.  It was pretty awesome to hear the enthusiasm and joy that went with the stories of offshore adventures.  Pretty cool!  We always look to extend those connections year round for those who have an open seat or two so feel free to give us a ring if interested.

A thank you to the volunteers, as if it weren’t for them, the WTC could not exist.  In no particular order:  Dave, Tucker & Will, Mac, Marcus, Merry, Carey & Jonathan, Sanford, Scott, Mitch, Ken, Zac, Mike H, Russ, Rick, Cami & Glen, Jack & Julie, Mike, Adam, Steven, Joshua, Lyn, Max, Terry, Holly & Thom, The Ocean Gold Crew of Paul, Greg, Steven & Fernando and more who stepped up at one point or another and made this event happen.  Getting together one time per year and pulling something this big and complex off as cleanly as we did is quite the achievement!..  Nice work.

After the weigh in, dinner kicked into high gear as Emerald Cove Catering returned to put on a spectacular spread of marinated steaks and chicken as well as a seafood boil and darn near forty gallons of secret recipe clam chowder they made in house.  As always, great food and great people equal great times and the festive atmosphere carried forth to the awards, warrior recognition and another rock solid drawing.  A special mention to volunteer Jonathan who upon winning a Batson live bait rod, donated it back to raise a few more bucks.  Those funds are earmarked back to Zac’s Warrior Rods program to buy parts for building custom rods for next year’s warriors.  A nice touch of class!

Thanks again to all the Sponsors that make much of our wounded warrior and drawing possible.  Without them, our event would not be what it is.  Please give them a thank you when you see them.
